William Edwards is an 11 – 16 mixed comprehensive school, serving the local community. It is an exceptionally successful, challenging and enjoyable place for young people and teachers to learn together. I am very proud to work with such a dedicated and committed staff, who together with our students create outstanding opportunities for academic and personal progress, both in the classroom and in numerous out-of-school learning experiences.William Edwards’ students excel in many, many areas. Our students consistently make progress in line with the top 10% of schools nationally.
Our sports teams frequently achieve success at county, regional and national level. Our new £1.4 million Badminton Centre and Sports Hall opened in May 2012 in partnership with Badminton England and allows further exciting opportunities for our students and the wider community. Drama and Music performances are of an exceptionally high standard, and the school even has its own Shakespeare Company. Our students enter competitions in Mathematics, Product Design, Art, Science and Public Speaking as well as many other areas, and this breadth of experience is fundamental to our development of self aware and responsive young people who are ready to make a contribution in their community.
As a school community we are committed to the values we wish to instil in our students: we encourage and develop responsibility, leadership, team work, integrity, respect and resilience. We expect the highest standards in behaviour and in attitudes to learning, and we support each and every child in their quests to achieve their very best.
William Edwards is the lead school in the South West Essex Community Education Trust, a growing Multi Academy Trust of 5 schools.
The school has recently been given a ringing endorsement by the Department for Education to replicate William Edwards by building a Free School, Orsett Health Academy – a brand new secondary school for Thurrock. The school has a reputation for innovative pedagogy – iPads, double projection, writable walls and moveable desks support engaging and flexible learning environments.
William Edwards is also the Lead Strategic Partner for the Thurrock Teaching School Alliance www.thurrocktsa.org.uk. This provides numerous professional development opportunities for staff at the school including bespoke leadership development courses with the Institute of Education. The Teaching School (TTSA) has National College accredited CPD, which is central to the Trust and its growth.
